Drive air setup - It's all about pressure!

Setting up the drive air correctly is absolutely necessary to ensure peak performance and maximum durability. Did you even encounter the problem that sufficient cutting during the operation was simply not possible and you had to constantly remove the bur from the tooth to allow the handpiece to generate more rotations? Or your favorite handpiece has a very high number of issues recently and the bearings are constantly defective?

Chances are the pressure in your unit is not correctly set up and you are either under or overdriving your equipment.

Ensure to follow the handpieces manufacturer's instructions for use to ensure the correct settings. Generally, the drive air pressure should be set at 2.8 - 3.0 bar (40 - 44 psi).

If you are uncertain and are not very familiar with the technical setup of your dental chair and compressor, please contact a local technician.

1. Preparation

KaVo Pressure Gauge

Make sure you have access to the driver air regulation valve. If you cannot access the valve, please check the dental chairs manufacturer's instructions for use, contact the manufacturer or a certified technician directly. Furthermore, ensure that you have the following tools at hand:

- Handpiece coupler (Multiflex) is attached to the tubing

- Pressure measuring gauge (shown in the picture) including another coupling

- High-speed handpiece that is attached to the pressure gauge coupler

2. Measuring the current pressure and adjust if necessary

Why is it necessary to use a specific pressure gauge and why can't we just set the pressure on the compressor? Simply because of the distance from the compressor to the dental chair and then from the chair to the handpiece the air faces a lot of friction on the tubing walls or through several turns the pressure is reduced.

So to check the pressure as precisely as possible we are required to take the tubing with the attached coupler and insert it into the pressure gauge. Then we set the suitable handpiece onto the coupler that has been installed on the pressure gauge.

If the foot-switch of the dental chair is activated it is now possible to check the drive air. As mentioned above ensure to turn the drive aus valve into the correct direction to align it with the required settings mentioned in the instructions for use.
