Manual Disinfection & Drying To disinfect instruments is just as relevant as the cleaning and sterilization to ensure cross-contamination can be prevented.   Through the disinfection process the number of pathogens will be reduced to 5 log10- to ensure an infection or pathogen transmission can be eliminated. For the manual disinfection of handpieces chemicals are required, which will be used to flush the handpiece. #### Comparison to thermal disinfection Contrary to the automated disinfection process through a thermal disinfector, these chemicals (Aldehydes based on QAV) have a few downsides - Still MK-dent products are validated to be disinfected with them as long as the instructions for use are applied correctly. Upside: - Lower cost of material Downside: - Potential gaps in effectiveness. - Some organisms can show primary bacterial resistance to individual active substances or adaptation can occur. Bacteria are particularly insensitive to disinfectants when they form spores and/or grow in the biofilm. - The disinfectant itself can be contaminated and trigger an infection. - Chemical disinfectants are often dangerous (extremely flammable, caustic, harmful, irritating, and allergenic) and therefore a health risk for staff and patients. - In general, chemical disinfection is associated with corrosion risks. Though manual disinfection poses some risks, MK-dent products are validated to be successfully disinfected through this process. Please check the individual instructions for use to confirm. ### Process: a) Required equipment: - Paper cloth - ALPRO WL-cid - Suitable lubrication adapter/cleaning tool - ALPRO WL-dry   b) Ensure the following steps are executed properly: ![](https://service.mk-dent.com/hubfs/image-png-Dec-28-2022-09-09-38-5635-AM.png) 1\. Surface disinfection Spray the cloth with a sufficient amount of ALPRO WL-cid and wipe down the entire handpiece. 2\. Internal disinfection Take the lubrication adapter and screw it onto the ALPRO WL-cid spray can. Ensure the adapter is properly seated and the o-ring is in good condition. Push the button on the spray can 1 times for 3 seconds each to properly flush the inside of the handpiece. Remove the handpiece form the adapter and set it down for an exposure time of 2 minutes. Drying To ensure the disinfectant solutions will not remain inside the handpiece, causing possible corrosion, kindly ensure to properly use the ALPRO WL-dry to dry the handpiece from the inside and outside. Grab the ALPR WL-dry spray can and attach the lubrication adapter/cleaning tool. Press the button of the spray can until no further liquid is coming form the head.
